Fantasy Recommendations?

Yeah, sorry, I don't have a book review today. I'll hopefully have one next week, though. We shall see.

Anyways, I'm working on the brainstorming, more specifically, the backstory, for a new idea right now. It's a fantasy. I've never actually completed a fantasy. All- and by all I mean both- of my completed first drafts have been sci-fi/dystopian. Well, I've recently taken a liking to the tone of those medieval time period fantasies. So, I've set off on the quest of writing a fantasy.

Because of that, I have two requests to ask of you, my loyal blog readers (loyal, I say, even though this blog hasn't even been up a month, but still... XD).

One: Please hold me accountable to finishing this at some point. Just, on any post I make, randomly comment, "So, how's that fantasy coming?" Then I shall be shamed into continuing it when that inevitable time comes that I want to give up on it.

Two: Help me continue to be inspired. For me, when I'm writing something, it just helps me to keep going if I'm reading something at least slightly similar to my WIP. So, what are some of y'all's favorite fantasies? Preferably the ones with that medieval times sort of feel to them. I mean the ones like Eragon and Seraphina (even though I've never actually completely read either of those books). By the way, random little squirrel, I just realized that there is not a single fantasy book on my bookshelf. *scurries off to check Kindle* Okay, there are some on my Kindle. Just in case you're wondering what kinds of fantasies I've read and liked, here's a short list of what's on my Kindle:
Graceling by Kristin Cashore
Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson
Poison by Bridget Zinn
And, well, I would give a rough synopsis of this mystery idea that you know nothing about other than the genre, but I don't even have an actual, erm, plot yet. Just lots of backstory and a very vague idea for a premise.

So, what are some of y'all's favorite fantasy books? :-)

  1. Huzzah for starting a Fantasy story! Those are so~much~fun.

For Fantasy, I would recommend the Tales of Goldstone Wood series, and the Dragon Keeper Chronicles. Both are whole serieses, so you'll be set up for some reading material for awhile, but both of them I would very strongly recommend. If you're looking for a more Narnia-type story, the Archives of Anthropos is good, and if you're looking for a Fantasy world without dragons and fairies around every corner, The Dragon King Trilogy is good (though, the third one isn't near as good as the first two. And, just for the record, the "Dragon King" isn't actually a dragon, it's just a title). For Fantasy retellings of Bible stories, the "Passages" series by Paul McCusker is very good. And, if you want more, just ask. I don't suspect you will at the moment, though. xP

    1. Thank you! I'm probably going to be adding the Tales of Goldstone Wood series to my TBR list. As for the others- I'll just wait until I get through these books first. XD

  2. Beyonders, Fablehaven, and Five Kingdoms by Brandon Mull! (The third one is a series that isn't finished yet, but the other two serieses are complete.) And of course The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien. (<<<< all of those are my favorite books of all time. XD)

  3. Yay! I love giving out book recommendations :)

    - Resistance by Jaye L. Knight. You. Have. To. Read. This. Book. I've read it three times. It is amazing. And it is Christian fantasy. This is the first book of a series of six.
    - Makilien Trilogy by Molly Evangeline. This is actually the same author as above, but a different pen name. Also Christian fantasy, and is really awesome :)
    - The Door Within Trilogy by Wayne Thomas Batson. I love this series a lot. It is a Christian Allegory Fantasy.
    - I've been reading The Tales of Goldstone Wood also, though I've gotten stuck on the third book. But, I will try it again because it is really amazing :)
    - And of course LOTR and the Hobbit :)

Those are my favorite fantasy books, but I also have a few recommendations of Sci-Fi if you are interested. Let me know if you read any of the above!
